Annual MLK Day Event

Please join us for our 20th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration.  A free Southern Style Brunch will begin at 11am.  Donation$ for the brunch are appreciated.  Following the brunch at 12p(noon) a program honoring MLK will be held until 2p.

"Race and Incarceration: How Prison Writing Programs Help to Give a Voice to the Voiceless" is the title of  the after noon program talk.  Fitchburg State University Professor Lisa Moison will address attendees on  the topic of mass incarceration.

On average, African Americans are incarcerated in state prisons at a rate that is 5.1 times the imprisonment of whites. In some states the rate can be as high as 10:1 (2016, The Sentencing Project).  The discussion will focus on race, incarceration, and how prison writing programs are helping the incarcerated to find a voice, an identity, and an outlet for their thoughts, feelings, and views on current power and racial dynamics within the “walls” that they live.

Instrumental and voice music will also comprise the celebration. Soloist Shantel Woodson will lend her sonorous vocals to “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing.”

All are welcome to attend both of these free events.
