In 1999, Reverend Dr. Susan Suchocki Brown and members of the First Church UU Diversity Committee realized that there was neither recognition nor remembrance of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, in Leominster, MA. This church group felt that there was a need to reawaken and honor Dr. King’s dream locally. The goal was to work within the community and with the schools to involve students. From this beginning, the MLK Coalition was created.
Currently, two events occur which are sponsored by the MLK Coalition. The first is an annual program is created to celebrate and honor Dr. King's legacy in a contemporary context. The goal is for guests to derive an understanding of the timeless principles and indelible ideals that are his lasting legacy. The desire is for folks to be uplifted and inspired from the various portions of programs which present his principles through art, drama, speech and song. The second is a Wrestling with Racism disucssion series where we talk about our experiences and learn from one another in a safe evrnoment.
